I have been a teacher for 26 years, a Headteacher for 11 years and, at the age of 50, this much I know about basic budgeting.
A fundamental truth about school budgets: If your costs rise but your income remains the same you have less spending power. There is one person in the whole country I need to understand this fundamental truth about school budgets, but I fear she doesn’t…(and her Shadow isn’t much better).

And as our costs continue to rise, our funding has fallen. Since 2010 we have had our capital budget cut by £349,000. I would love Nicky Morgan to visit the biggest school in York – which is one of the richest cities in the UK, which is the sixth biggest economy in the world – on a rainy day and see how many buckets we have to use to catch the water coming through our leaky ceilings.

BTW, the budget heading for Pupil Premium funding on our RM spreadsheet is still entitled Standards Fund…

  1. Clear and to the point John . The reality is that so many schools will be setting deficit budgets over the next three years and beyond which will cost money ! Action now would stop this but instead we have obsession with structures rather than helping schools work on a daily basis

The issue for me is that they actually do understand. But then I think you are playing the devil’s advocate.
Surely this is an issue of how much the majority of the UK population are willing to pay to educate other peoples kids. I feel that this perhaps is where we are seeing change, and with 5 years of 2015 conservative majority your spending power is only going one way. That’s what you get for teaching poor people’s kids.
